We would like to welcome you to the Atlantic Beach Police Department website. Our department consists of three divisions headed by Police Chief G. Allen Smith with Maj. Jeff Harvey second in command. Capt. Shawn Reaume oversees the Patrol div. which consists of four shifts manned by three officers each and a Community Policing Coordinator. Lt. Mike Ussery oversees the Investigations section.

Seeking Volunteers for the Community Watch Program

What is Neighborhood Watch?

In essence, Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that stresses education and common sense. It teaches citizens how to help themselves by identifying and reporting suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. In addition, it provides citizens with the opportunity to make their neighborhoods safer and improve the quality of life. Neighborhood Watch groups typically focus on observation and awareness as a means of preventing crime and employ strategies that range from simply promoting social interaction and "watching out for each other" to active patrols by groups of citizens.

The reason for this effectiveness is rather simple: Involving community members in watch programs decreases opportunities for criminals to commit crime rather than attempting to change their behavior or motivation.

Today's Neighborhood Watch Program is an effective means of crime control and neighborhood cohesiveness. While not all of the programs in place today go by the same name, they all accomplish the same goal: to bring community members together to fight crime.

Atlantic Beach Police Dept is joining forces with the Pine Knoll Shores Police Dept to form a Volunteers in Police Service Program.

The VIPS Program is for citizens 55 years and older who wish to volunteer their time and skills with a community law enforcement agency. The program’s ultimate goal is to enhance the capacity of state and local law enforcement to utilize volunteers. Since September 11, 2001, the demands on state and local law enforcement have increased dramatically. As a result, the already limited resources of these agencies are being stretched further than ever, at a time when the towns needs every available officer out on the beat.

In many jurisdictions around the country, volunteers in the community have offered their time and skills services to law enforcement agencies. These citizen volunteers help supplement and support officers and civilian personnel by allowing them to concentrate on their primary duties. Volunteer roles may include performing clerical tasks, serving as an extra set of "eyes and ears," assisting with search and rescue activities, patrolling the beaches and the neighborhoods, performing business checks, and writing citations for accessible parking violations
